Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a surprising 3-2 defeat to debutants Malawi in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group C opener, leaving the defending champions with plenty to ponder.
Malawi’s victory was driven by the Chawinga sisters. Temwa struck twice and Tabitha added a third to complete a stunning result.
Nigeria did respond - Rasheedat Ajibade scored and substitute Uchenna Kanu pulled one back - but the comeback fell short.
Midfielder Esther Okoronkwo admitted the team started slowly and vowed to improve.
“Next game we have to come back better, in this game, we came out a little flat. But it is what it is, we have to go back and learn our lesson and learn where we should fix and come back better in the next game,” she said after the match.
Asked about a contentious penalty decision after she was brought down inside the box, Okoronkwo stayed measured. “I don’t know what the referee saw but I think it should have been looked at but it is what it is I didn’t get it, so I won’t talk about it or complain about it.”
