The Federal Government has officially renamed the 750‑kilometre Lagos‑Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced in Abuja on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
Umahi told journalists that the decision was taken in consultation with the ministry’s leadership and staff.
“By the power conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Works, and in consultation with the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, the directors, and the entire staff of the Ministry, we have decided to name the entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Umahi said, adding, “This is a dream that Mr President had about 27 years ago,” Umahi said.
He also said that the Tinubu administration, which launched construction of the highway in March 2024 after taking office in May 2023, will carry the President’s name across the project’s entire length.
Estimated to cost about ₦15 trillion when finished, the highway is among the administration’s flagship legacy projects.
The first section is nearing completion, but the project has attracted controversy since work began.
Umahi also noted that the idea for the coast‑to‑coast road dates back roughly 27 years, to when Tinubu served as Lagos State governor, and described the renaming as honoring that long‑held vision.
