The federal government has announced that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its traditional khaki uniform with locally produced adire fabric as part of sweeping reforms to modernize the one-year service programme.
Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande made the revelation during a Channels Television interview on Thursday, July 2, 2026, saying the redesigned uniform aims to promote Nigerian-made products and revive the country’s textile industry.
“It’s adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria - in Ogun, in Kwara - so let’s put our money back into the country,” he said.
The move follows approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of several key changes intended to reposition the NYSC.
While the council retained the scheme’s one-year duration, it endorsed seven major reforms, including digitalisation, a shift in leadership from military to civilian hands, and the new uniform design.
Olawande also explained that deployment procedures will become more structured and aligned with choices corps members make during orientation camp.
“If you have interest that you want to go to the North-East why not, but if you don’t have interest, instead of redeploying you, paying people for camp, doing all those funny things, we said no, let us look at it and say who are those in that area, that can reside in those geographical areas and still give us the kind of number we are looking for since we are saying NYSC should be more impactful. So, that is what we are talking about,” he said.
“After you leave camp, you will not be posted to a school arbitrarily; postings will follow the process you completed at camp and your stated preferences,” he said.
The minister said the approach will make postings more practical and responsive to corps members’ backgrounds and interests.
President Bola Tinubu in a statement posted on X, had said that the reformed NYSC will prioritise indigenes, residents, and graduates of institutions in states considered high-risk when making deployments, as part of efforts to make the scheme “safer and smarter.”
The deployment changes aim to reduce unnecessary reassignments and better match placements to corps members who can realistically live and work in assigned areas.
Other reforms include 11 specialised streams for corps members and a condensed six-week orientation camp arrangement, measures the government says will increase the scheme’s relevance and impact.
Already, public concern is growing that choosing adire fabrics favors the president’s region and risks ethnic bias. Critics are already calling the proposal regional favoritism.
