Edo Assembly Speaker steps down amid impeachment pressure

Blessing Agbebaku, speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, has resigned amid reports that members were preparing to impeach him.

Ivy Ebojele, Agbebaku’s media aide, confirmed the resignation in a Facebook post on Monday, August 17, 2026, saying further details would follow.

“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS. DETAILS LATER,” she wrote.

Yekini Idaiyi, the lawmaker for Akoko Edo II, was reportedly sworn in as the new speaker.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West, became speaker when the eighth assembly was elected in June 2023. Tensions in the house surfaced in May 2024 after he suspended three colleagues accused of plotting to remove him and other principal officers.

The suspended lawmakers - allies of former deputy governor Philip Shaibu and linked to political factions around Adams Oshiomhole - denied the charges and called the suspensions politically driven.

Agbebaku also claimed external interference in the impeachment plot, alleging that charms and ritual items had been brought into the assembly complex.

In May 2025 he left the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress after some APC figures sought his removal over his PDP background and perceived lack of an “original” APC candidate from his zone.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, however, reportedly supported Agbebaku, citing his loyalty and assistance in advancing the governor’s agenda.
