The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has publicly reaffirmed its full support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino amid growing international criticism of his proposed World Cup sell-off plan.
In a statement released Thursday evening, August 6, 2026, CAF said its executive committees stand “unanimously” behind Infantino.
Calls for Infantino’s resignation intensified after details emerged about the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative, which would have sold minority stakes in the World Cup to private investors.
The plan drew widespread backlash and was ultimately shelved.
Earlier this week, senior FIFA directors convened an emergency meeting in Morocco to voice their “full support” for Infantino as pressure rose from several confederations. CAF praised the 56-year-old Swiss official for his “support for African football” and for helping to deliver a “very successful FIFA World Cup 2026.”
Patrice Motsepe, CAF president, said the confederation will continue collaborating with FIFA to “safeguard and adhere to governance, due process, and transparency” in line with global best practices.
“We are committed to continue working together with FIFA, its Member Associations, other Football Confederations and stakeholders to safeguard and adhere to governance, due process, and transparency global best practises and to contribute to the development and growth of Football worldwide,” he said.
UEFA has insisted that its planned boycott of future FIFA competitions is still in place despite the withdrawal of the FFE initiative.
The European football body said FIFA had not met all of its demands.
“UEFA’s associations were very clear about the conditions attached to their non-participation in FIFA competitions,” UEFA said.
First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn, and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again.
