US President Donald Trump has directed that the American flag be flown at half-staff nationwide for one week to honour country music icon Dolly Parton.
Parton’s family announced her death in a video posted on social media on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The singer, celebrated for classics such as “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” was 80.
In a message on Truth Social, President Trump called Parton “one of the greatest country singers” and said her passing is a profound loss for millions.
“There has never been anyone like her, and never will,” he wrote, adding that the flag-lowering would begin Tuesday at 6:00 PM. “Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”
Earlier this year, Parton cancelled a run of Las Vegas shows because of health issues and revealed she was undergoing treatment for an unspecified illness.
Widely known as the “queen of country music,” Parton’s six-decade career produced more than 3,000 songs and over 100 million record sales worldwide. Her song “I Will Always Love You” later became a global phenomenon when Whitney Houston covered it in 1992.
Born the fourth of 12 children, Parton grew up in a poor farming family in rural Tennessee, sharing a one-room cabin. Her musical roots came from her mother’s folk singing and an aunt who played guitar; she began performing in church at age six, where her grandfather was pastor.
