The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has created a fact-finding committee to examine the recent poor performances of the nation’s teams at international competitions.
The federation said the inquiry will give “specific attention” to the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
For the first time since the tournament began in 1991, the Super Falcons will not be at the Women’s World Cup after a 2-1 loss to South Africa in a continental playoff on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The defeat followed their earlier exit from automatic qualification when they were beaten by Cameroon in the quarter-final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
The NFF named a six-member panel to investigate the Falcons’ shortcomings. Former federation general secretary Fanny Amun will chair the committee.
Other members are Ladan Bosso, former Flying Eagles coach; Desire Oparanozie, former Super Falcons captain; Mutiu Adepoju, ex-Super Eagles star; and Alex Mana, a former referee. Nasiru Sa’idu, chair of the Sokoto State Football Association, will act as secretary.
The Falcons’ elimination follows a similar disappointment for the men’s team, the Super Eagles, who missed last year’s men’s World Cup in North America after losing to DR Congo on penalties in a continental playoff.
