NGE mourns loss of a ‘Gentleman of the Press’, Samson Dotun Oladipo

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced the death of Dr. Samson Dotun Oladipo, describing the veteran journalist as a “gentleman” whose career left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s media landscape.

In a statement signed by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild said it received news of Dr. Oladipo’s passing with profound sadness. 

The statement praised his decades-long career, noting his professionalism, courage, intellectual depth and steadfast commitment to the principles of journalism and nation building.

Dr. Oladipo served as a newspaper editor and later became publisher of the online platform, Eagles Online. The Guild highlighted his dedication to the growth of Nigerian media and the digital press, saying his work helped shape the industry’s development.

The statement also noted Dr. Oladipo’s active membership in the NGE, which reflected his belief in professional solidarity and in promoting ethical, credible and responsible journalism. 

The Guild said his contributions had added momentum to the body’s mission and expressed sympathy to his family, colleagues and the wider media community.

The Guild further notes: “Dr. Oladipo was not merely a media practitioner but also a respected colleague, mentor and contributor to the continuing evolution of the Nigerian media landscape.

“His death is a great loss to his family, colleagues, the journalism profession and the wider media community. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, professional excellence, courage and service that will continue to inspire those who knew and worked with him.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, colleagues, friends and associates. 

“At this difficult moment, our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We pray that God will grant the family the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss as well as grant the departed journalist eternal rest.

“May Dr. Sampson Dotun Oladipo's memory remain a blessing to those who knew him, and may his contributions to journalism endure.”
