Team Nigeria initially upgraded to silver in the men’s 4×100m relay at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Canada was disqualified for a lane infringement, is back to bronze after Canada win appeal on lane infringement.
The quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike clocked 38.12 seconds and were originally third, but the initial disqualification of Canada for lane infringement elevated them to second place - an improvement on the bronze the team won at the 2022 Games in Birmingham.
The earlier disqualification placed Ghanaian third but all of the following Canada’s appeal win, take things back to earlier position, thus leaving Nigerian back on third place.
Nigeria in that race, adjusted its strategy for the final, placing its two fastest sprinters on the opening legs. Ashe fired the start and handed to Ajayi, who had earlier claimed bronze in the men’s 100m.
Fakorede, a 200m specialist, negotiated the curve before Onwuzurike, silver medallist in the 200m, repelled late charges from Ghana’s Abdul Rasheed Saminu and South Africa’s Akani Simbine to secure the podium spot.
Australia took gold in 38.07, which Ghana moved up to bronze following Canada’s disqualification now back to fourth place
Nearby on the infield, Ruth Usoro also earned silver in the women’s long jump with a first-attempt mark of 6.87m, behind England’s Jazmine Sawyer. Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl claimed bronze.
Earlier on the same night, Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m team - Ezekiel Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George, Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo - added a bronze, finishing in 3:12.85 behind Jamaica (gold) and Australia (silver).
Those results lift Team Nigeria’s 2026 Commonwealth Games athletics haul to 23 medals: 10 gold, 6silver and 7 bronze.
