Ibrahim Gusau has resigned as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and on Thursday, August 27, 2026, he laid out his reasons at a press conference in Abuja.
Gusau said love for Nigeria and a desire to continue serving the game motivated his decision to step down. He described the resignation as an act taken in the nation’s best interest and framed it as a choice aimed at protecting the future of Nigerian football.
But his explanation comes after sustained public anger over the federation’s stewardship of the game.
The calls for Gusau’s sacking - and for senior members of the NFF to be removed - intensified following the Super Falcons’ disappointing run at the just-concluded WAFCON, Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the men’s World Cup, and a string of poor performances by other national teams.
Fans, pundits and some stakeholders blamed governance failures, weak preparation and poor decision-making for the slide in standards.
Pressure mounted both online and in the media, with vocal campaigns demanding wholesale changes at the NFF. Many members of the football public said Gusau’s resignation was an overdue response to what they view as years of decline rather than solely a patriotic choice as he described.
Nonetheless, Gusau gave his explanation during a press conference in Abuja.
Gusau was appointed as the President of NFF on September 30, 2022, at the 78th Elective Congress in Benin City, Edo State.
On Thursday, he resigned alongside other board members with immediate effect amid calls for a probe over the NFF’s handling of football in Nigeria.
The call for a probe was triggered by the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
But Gusau said, “As Nigerians, nobody is better than this country; we all love our country and its progress, and as people that have been in football and managing football, we need to look at ourselves and say what next?
“So we made consultations between family, friends, and stakeholders, and I decided to resign my position. I advised my Board members that anybody who will follow me should resign.
“For me, I want to make it clear, and by the grace of God, we hope to continue making our contribution because of our experience and relationships we have within African football; we will continue to give our contribution for the progress of Nigerian football.”
