| Mr. Peter Obi |
The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) has condemned an alleged AI-generated image circulating online, which falsely shows the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi; Cardinal John Onaiyekan; and Enugu State NDC governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Oha, receiving Pope Leo XIV’s blessing for electoral victory.
The media office described the image as deceptive and politically motivated.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, POMR urged political opponents to desist from dragging the Pope and the Catholic Church into partisan campaigns, saying the Church is a sacred institution that should never be exploited for electoral advantage.
“Such an act is misleading and entirely unwarranted,” the statement said. “The Church must be respected, not used as a tool for political gain.”
POMR reiterated that Obi’s campaign remains issue-based, focused on rescuing Nigeria from poverty, insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship. It added that the campaign seeks to expand opportunities for young Nigerians and build a country where every citizen can live with dignity and hope.
The media office called on the public to disregard the fabricated image and urged political actors to engage in campaigns anchored on ideas, records, and solutions rather than misinformation.
The statement signed by Idris Zekeri Jnr POMR Spokesman reads in part: “Peter Obi's campaign is centred on issues. It seeks to rescue Nigeria from poverty, insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship; expand opportunities for our youths; and build a nation in which every Nigerian can live with dignity and hope.
“He also welcomes vigorous political debate and challenges his opponents to address Nigerians on these urgent matters. "Let us debate our records, policies, competence, character, and vision for the country."
“The 2027 election must focus on Nigeria's future, not fabricated religious controversies," Obi said, expressing his disappointment over the incident.
“The Pope and the Catholic Church should be permitted to carry out their spiritual responsibilities without being drawn into partisan disputes.
“Let us keep the Church separate from politics and focus the campaign on the genuine issues facing Nigerians," he said.
A New Nigeria Is Possible.
