History Made: Nigeria’s Samson Adamu becomes CAF’s first Nigerian General Secretary

Confirmed….CAF General Secretary Samson Adamu

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has formally confirmed Nigeria’s Samson Adamu as its substantive General Secretary, ending months in which he served in an acting capacity.

Adamu was first appointed Acting General Secretary on March 29, 2026, following the resignation of Swiss-Congolese administrator Véron Mosengo-Omba. His confirmation now makes him the first Nigerian to hold the position since CAF was established in 1957.

The 40-year-old previously served as CAF’s Director of Competitions and was later Director of Tournaments and Events. He takes charge of the continental body’s administration after receiving the approval of CAF’s Executive Committee.

With a strong background in sports governance, Adamu has been central to the organisation and delivery of major African football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the CAF Champions League.

His appointment is widely regarded as a landmark moment for Nigerian football administration, placing a Nigerian at the top administrative table of African football for the first time in the organisation’s 70-year history.

As general secretary, Adamu will fill a role widely considered the “engine room” of African football, responsible for the body’s day-to-day administration, legal matters, and implementing decisions made by the executive committee.

Adamu holds a FIFA Master in management, law and humanities of sport. He began his journey in football administration by establishing the now-defunct Copa Lagos beach tournament in the early 2010s.
