Prayers won’t Feed Nigerians!” - Anger trails Tinubu’s Makkah trip

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

A State House press statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, says the President will depart Abuja on Thursday, October 29, 2026, for Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to perform Umrah, an Islamic spiritual exercise involving a pilgrimage to the Holy City.

According to the statement, the visit will give the President “an opportunity for spiritual reflection, devotion, and prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability, and continued progress.”

It further states: “While in Makkah, President Tinubu will perform the religious rites associated with Umrah, seeking Allah’s guidance and blessings for Nigeria and its people.”

However, many Nigerians reacting to the announcement have expressed anger and disappointment. They are questioning how the trip will address the chronic hardship and hunger in the country, as well as the broader problem of poor governance.

To many critics, the announcement has deepened frustration over the daily struggles facing ordinary citizens, with some insisting that prayers abroad cannot substitute for concrete action at home.

The statement nonetheless adds: “Before leaving Abuja, President Tinubu will commission at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport some equipment acquired by the Nigerian Air Force for its operations.

“The President is expected back in the country next week, after completing the spiritual exercise.

The statement posted on Onanuga’s X handle, formerly Twitter, is attracting huge backlash by many Nigerians who question how this trip will will alleviate the multi-dimensional poverty in Nigeria caused by bad leadership.
