Prince William stuns Graham Norton audience with surprise sofa appearance

The Prince of Wales made an unannounced appearance on The Graham Norton Show, drawing gasps and cheers from the studio audience during a special edition marking the Earthshot Prize.

The episode airs on BBC One at 22:40 on Friday.

Norton was speaking with actors Cate Blanchett and Hannah Waddingham and conservationist Robert Irwin, all of whom are connected to the environmental prize, when he invited Prince William onto the sofa.

The group discussed the need to combine optimism with urgency in addressing climate change, according to report by the BBC

William founded the Earthshot Prize in 2020 to “celebrate and scale the solutions that will repair our planet.” The initiative takes inspiration from former US President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot programme, which challenged scientists to land astronauts on the Moon and return them safely.

The prize awards £1 million to each of five annual winners across its goals: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate.

William has committed to the prize until 2030, with this year’s winners due to be announced at a ceremony in Mumbai in November.

The conversation also turned lighter, with the prince discussing his long-standing support for Aston Villa and his enthusiasm for Christopher Nolan films.

Last year’s Earthshot ceremony in Rio de Janeiro featured figures including former Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel and then-UK prime minister Keir Starmer, with performances by Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes, BBC reports.

Among the 2025 winners was Lagos Fashion Week, recognised for pushing sustainability in one of the world’s most wasteful industries by requiring designers to demonstrate environmental commitment.

At the ceremony, William described the winners as “proof that progress is possible.”
