Court Ruling Against ADC: NDC warns judiciary not to become a weapon against democracy

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned that the Federal High Court judgment derecognising the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could deepen fears that the judiciary is being drawn into efforts to weaken opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., the NDC said it respected the judiciary as “the last hope of the common man,” but expressed concern that judgments of this nature, if not carefully handled, could create the impression that courts are being used to scuttle democracy and silence opposition voices.

The Abuja Federal High Court, in a ruling delivered by Justice Peter Lifu, nullified the ADC leadership under former Senate President David Mark and invalidated actions taken by the caretaker committee, including decisions connected with the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

The NDC said the frequency and pattern of such rulings, particularly from High Courts, suggested a deliberate attempt to shut the ADC out of the forthcoming general elections through legal means.

It argued that such an outcome would further shrink the space for multi-party democracy, which it described as already under serious threat under the APC-led government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The judiciary must guard its independence, impartiality and integrity at all times,” the party said, urging judicial officers to avoid any action capable of eroding public confidence in the courts.

The NDC called on the ADC to appeal the judgment without delay, and asked the appellate court to grant an accelerated hearing because of the fast-approaching 2027 general elections.

It warned that prolonged legal uncertainty could undermine democratic participation and deprive Nigerians of genuine electoral choices.

The statement closed with the party’s campaign message: “A New Nigeria is Possible!”

The NDC’s intervention adds to growing political reactions after the court ruling, which has placed the ADC’s leadership structure and its 2027 electoral plans under intense scrutiny.
