Ilhan Omar defies Trump, storms to fifth term in Congress

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar

Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has secured a fifth term in the United States House of Representatives, winning re-election in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District despite sustained attacks from President Donald Trump and an ongoing federal investigation.

Omar defeated Republican nominee John Nagel in the Minneapolis-centred district, a Democratic stronghold where she has served since first winning office in 2018.

Her victory makes her one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress and the first Somali American to serve in the chamber.

The re-election came amid heightened political pressure. In October, federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., home as part of a criminal investigation into possible fraud connected with her immigration and naturalisation records. Authorities reportedly seized her phone, laptop and passport, while subpoenas were issued to some relatives.

Trump had repeatedly targeted Omar over her Somali refugee background and progressive politics, calling for her resignation and reviving allegations of identity fraud after a court filing referred to her by an additional name. Omar has consistently denied wrongdoing and has not been charged with any crime.

Omar, one of Trump’s most prominent critics, described the investigation as political intimidation and an abuse of federal law enforcement. Former President Barack Obama has also accused Trump of targeting her because of her political views.

In her victory speech, Omar said the result showed that voters reward leaders who govern with compassion and empathy, framing her win as a rejection of the Trump administration’s approach.
