Lionel Messi wins FIFA "The Best" award for 3rd time

Lionel Messi clinched the 2023 FIFA "The Best" award, surpassing Erling Haaland, who was the favorite. Messi's victory came after a remarkable year, during which he secured the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain and the Leagues Cup shortly after joining Inter Miami.

Despite Haaland's impressive debut season with 52 goals for Manchester City, Messi's achievements led to him being voted the best men's player for the third time. The award ceremony took place in London on January 15, 2024. Messi, 36, was not in attendance at the event.

The result was a surprise, as journalists had overwhelmingly favored Haaland. This victory marked Messi's retention of the title he had won in 2022, solidifying his status as a football legend.

Messi’s latest award is coming just three months after he became Ballon d’Or champion for a record-breaking eighth time.

The Argentinian garnered most of the votes in a three-man shortlist that included Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain talisman Kylian Mbappe.

Despite being largely unexceptional in the last 12 months, Messi topped the pile for the Best awards voted by captains and coaches of national teams.

The Argentina captain moved to David Beckham’s Miami team in 2023 scoring 11 goals in 14 appearances and winning the Leagues Cup with the team.

This marks two successive years of being named FIFA’s Best men’s player after previously winning in 2022 and before that in 2019.
