Jamaican sprinting legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has announced her retirement from athletics after the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Fraser-Pryce, a triple Olympic gold medalist and 10-time world champion, competed in her first Games at Beijing 2008.
In an interview with Essence, she cited her family as the reason for her retirement, saying, "My son needs me. My husband and I have been together since before I won in 2008. He has sacrificed for me. We’re a partnership, a team. It’s because of that support that I’m able to do the things that I have been doing for all these years. And I think I now owe it to them to do something else."
Fraser-Pryce has won eight Olympic medals and specializes in the 100 meters. She won back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the event in 2008 and 2012 and finished second in 2016.
She is known as the "pocket rocket" due to her speed and diminutive height and has become an instantly recognizable presence on the track due to her multi-colored hairstyles.
