Global alliance and NIPR sign MoU to boost PR education in Nigeria

Mohammed Idris

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management (Global Alliance).

The partnership aims to establish a degree-awarding academy for public relations practice in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the development of public relations and leadership education in the country and across Africa.

Idris also celebrated the recent election of a Nigerian, Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, as the Secretary-General of the African Public Relations Association (APRA).

Furthermore, the minister noted that public relations (PR) has now been designated as a cadre in the Federal Civil Service, with the Information Officer Cadre being re-designated to 'Information and Public Relations Officer Cadre', and the Executive Cadre to 'Executive Officer (Information and Public Relations)'. The NIPR played a crucial role in championing this change.

Idris emphasized that Nigeria will continue to play a leading role in strengthening and elevating public relations practice at home and across Africa. He cited the commendation from the President of the African Public Relations Association, Mr. Arik Karani, who acknowledged Nigeria as the only country in Africa with a law that professionalizes public relations, until Zambia introduced its own law last year.

The minister assured that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will continue to provide the enabling environment for the communications industry in Nigeria to thrive.
