RCCG suspends city of David's Pastor, Iluyomade over extravagant birthday party

Pastor Idowu Iluyomade and wife, Siju

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended Senior Pastor Idowu Iluyomade of the City of David Parish in Lagos State, effective immediately. The suspension follows an elaborate 60th birthday celebration for his wife, Siju, which sparked public outrage.

According to reports, Iluyomade received a letter suspending him weekend of June 1, 2024. He has been replaced by Pastor Charles Kpandei of the Resurrection Parish Region 11.

The suspension is reportedly for three months, following an investigation by a panel constituted by the church's Governing Council.

A high-ranking pastor in the church, who wished to remain anonymous, attributed the decision to the public backlash against the lavish birthday party, which took place just a week after the death of Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Bank.

Wigwe had been a significant benefactor to the church before his passing.

Iluyomade, fondly known as PID, has been at the center of controversy following the extravagant birthday celebration for his wife, Siji. Many felt the party was in poor taste, given the recent loss of Wigwe, who had been a significant blessing to the church.

The party suggested that the church had no emotional attachment to Wigwe, despite his contributions to the church before his death.

Apart from being in charge of the City of David, Iluyomade is the Special Assistant to the RCCG General Overseer on Christian Social Responsibility through His Love Foundation. It’s not clear yet if this responsibility has been taken from him, too.

It was also gathered that the pastor was suspended on two issues bordering on the audit of the church and the alleged resistance by the pastor to be transferred from the parish.

According to a report by The Punch, a source, who craved anonymity because of the weight of the matter, said, “The church’s Governing Council met on two issues, the issue of an audit of the church where questions were asked and the issue that the pastor allegedly resisted transfer.

“The council then resolved to suspend Iluyomade for three months, during which time the pastor next to him will be in charge.

“When he resumes from suspension, the council also resolved that he should resume at the church’s headquarters, not the City of David,” the report concluded.
