Nigeria faced a tough start on Day 14 of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Elizabeth Oluchi Anyanacho was defeated 2-0 in the women's -67 kg Taekwondo event by China's Jie Song, who advanced to the quarterfinals.
In women's wrestling, Esther Omolayo Kolawole lost 5-1 to Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova. Meanwhile, Ashton Adeyemi Mutuwa suffered a heavy defeat in men's 125kg freestyle wrestling, losing 11-0 to Hungary’s Daniel Ligeti.
Additionally, Tobi Amusan failed to qualify for the women’s 100m hurdles, and the Nigerian men’s 4x400m relay team was disqualified.
So far, it’s zero medal at the championship for Nigeria, the so-called giant of Africa that undoubtedly parades tons of talents.
But what is raw talent if not well honed and invested in. Sadly, the this edition of the games comes to a close in a couple of days, with little or no hope for Nigeria making it to the medals table.
It’s no gain saying that countries that prepared well by investing in this global event are right now reaping the dividends.
Let’s hope the authorities concerned must have learnt one or two things from this embarrassing outing to improve upon for a better one in the next four years.
