Ajayi, the national champion, surprised everyone by winning heat 5 in a time of 10.02 seconds, defeating the reigning Olympic champion, Marcell Jacobs, who finished second in 10.05 seconds.
Ashe secured one of the fastest non-automatic spots by placing fourth in heat 4 with a time of 10.16 seconds, behind Oblique Seville (9.99s), Hakim Sani Brown (10.02s), and Puripol Boonson (10.13s).
Ashe after the race, kind of expressed disappointment in his performance stating, "I came into today’s meet with a plan of running the perfect race…but during this heat, I didn’t execute well."
Despite this, Ashe is pleased to have qualified for the semifinals, providing him another chance to showcase his skills.
The Nigerian duo will be looking to continue their success in the semifinals and finals, which are scheduled for tomorrow evening.
