| The severed the Gombe-Yola highway |

A significant flood has completely severed the Gombe-Yola highway, impacting travel between the Northeast states of Adamawa and Taraba. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, September 19, 2024, near Lafiya Lamorde, a border town adjacent to Gombe State.
Commuters were left stranded as they gathered near the site where a major bridge is under construction between Savannah Sugar Company and Lafiya Lamorde. The floodwaters have washed away critical infrastructure at the construction site, rendering the road impassable for vehicles from either direction.
Some desperate travelers had to take the risk of crossing the washed away part of the road after waiting for over two hours when the water pressure reduced while some others ended their journey by returning.
Our Correspondent learnt that construction workers and volunteers were making efforts to make the road passable as it may take more than two days before a temporary arrangement can be made.
This washed out section of the road is already causing serious social and economic setbacks to the people, especially as harvesting season is around the corner.
Taraba and Adamawa States are home to some of Nigeria's known cattle rearers and farmers producing many major food crops transported to different parts of the country and beyond.
This disruption highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and infrastructure resilience in the region, particularly during heavy rainfall seasons. Local authorities are urged to address these vulnerabilities to prevent future incidents that can severely affect transportation and commerce.
The attention of the Federal Government is therefore urgently needed to fix the road to reduce Nigeria's rising food crisis.
