The Federal Government has initiated an immediate investigation into the prison break at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State, where 12 inmates escaped in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the incident as “unfortunate” and vowed to ensure all fleeing inmates are recaptured.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Babatunde Alao, the minister emphasized the use of advanced biometrics and technology to track down the escapees.
He also directed the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the facility, evaluate the situation, and commence a comprehensive audit to uncover the circumstances surrounding the breach.
“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NCoS confirmed that five of the 12 escapees have already been recaptured, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the remaining inmates. The service urged the public to remain calm and report any suspicious activities to aid in the manhunt.
The Kogi State Government has also pledged to collaborate with security agencies to prevent future occurrences, expressing concerns over possible internal compromise in the jailbreak.
As investigations continue, authorities have assured citizens that the situation is under control and urged them to go about their daily activities without fear.
