Lagos, Nigeria - The Muson Centre in Lagos was abuzz on Thursday, April 10, 2025, as dignitaries gathered for an inaugural symposium organized by Afenifere to honor the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo.
The event, titled “Afenifere: Identity, Ideas and Ideology,” marked Adebanjo’s 97th posthumous birthday and celebrated his enduring legacy as a champion of democracy, equity, and true federalism.
Prominent figures such as Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, and Rauf Aregbesola, former Minister of Interior, were in attendance.
In a heartfelt address shared on social media, Obi reflected on Adebanjo’s lifelong commitment to justice and unity in Nigeria, praising Afenifere’s dedication to progressive ideals.
Obi also said the event served as a reflection on the values of Afenifere and its pursuit of true federalism, democracy, and good governance over the years.
He added that the event also beamed the light on Adebanjo’s commitment to justice, equity, and a united Nigeria during his life time.
“Today, I had the honour of attending the inaugural symposium Organized by the Pan Yoruba Organization, the Afenifere to celebrate the exceptional legacy of Chief Ayo Adebanjo,” the post reads.
Adebanjo, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos state at age 96, was remembered for his unwavering advocacy for restructuring and inclusivity.
The symposium served as both a tribute to his legacy and a platform to reaffirm Afenifere’s commitment to the principles he championed throughout his life.
