Gov Sanwo-Olu unveils new train sets to boost Lagos rail mass transit blue line capacity

In a significant stride towards enhancing urban mobility, the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, today, June 8, 2025, officially unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line at the National Theatre Station.

Each train set comprises four cars, effectively doubling the current passenger capacity on the Blue Line and promising a transformative impact on daily commutes for thousands of Lagosians.

The governor highlighted that the addition of these new trains will reduce wait times, accelerate journey speeds, and improve the overall reliability of the rail system.

“Our goal is to have trains arriving every 10 minutes,” he stated, underscoring the commitment to creating a more efficient and dependable transit network.

Expressing gratitude, the governor acknowledged the pivotal role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government in supporting the project.

Their collaboration was instrumental from the procurement phase through to delivery, ensuring the successful expansion of the rail service.

Looking ahead, the governor revealed plans to further enhance the rail system before the end of the year with the arrival of new trains for the Red Line.

These upcoming trains will boast twice the capacity of the Blue Line trains, marking another leap forward in Lagos’ mass transit capabilities. Additionally, construction on Phase 2 of the Blue Line, extending from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is making steady progress.

“This is about building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started,” the governor affirmed, signaling a continued commitment to transforming the city’s transportation landscape.

With these developments, Lagos is poised to offer its residents a more comfortable, efficient, and modern commuting experience, reinforcing its position as a forward-looking metropolis dedicated to sustainable urban growth.
