| The late Dr. Doyin Abiola |
Dr. Doyin Abiola, the first female Managing Director and Publisher of Nigeria’s National Concord newspapers and wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola, has passed away. She died last night (August 5, 2025) around 9:15 pm at the age of 82.
Dr. Doyin Abiola was also the first Nigerian woman to serve as the editor of a national daily newspaper. Her journalism career began in 1969 with the Daily Sketch Newspaper, where she launched a column titled “Tiro,” addressing various public issues, including gender equality.
In 1970, she left Daily Sketch to pursue a master’s degree in Journalism in the United States. Upon completion, she returned to Nigeria to join the Daily Times as a Features Writer. She advanced to Group Features Editor before heading back to New York, where she earned a PhD in Communications and Political Science in 1979.
After completing her doctorate, she rejoined the Daily Times editorial board, working alongside notable editors such as Stanley Macebuh, Dele Giwa, and Amma Ogan.
Her tenure there was brief, as she was soon invited to become the pioneer daily editor of the newly established National Concord newspaper.
In 1986, she was promoted to Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of National Concord, marking a historic achievement as the first Nigerian woman to hold the editor-in-chief position at a daily newspaper.
Dr. Doyin Abiola’s trailblazing career left an indelible mark on Nigerian journalism. Her
career at National Concord Newspaper spanned three decades. She also served in various capacities in the media industry in Nigeria.
She was the Chairperson of the Awards Nominating panel at the first Nigerian Media Merit Award to be hosted in the country, and also a member of Advisory Council, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Ogun State University.
She was a recipient of Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) for her lifelong devotion to advancing the frontiers of knowledge and strengthening the media as a pillar of democracy.
The Trustees of DAME unanimously approved her selection as a recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award at the 24th DAME Ceremony.
She was the second woman to receive a DAME Lifetime Achievement Award after Mrs. OmobolaOnajide) and was later granted Eisenhower Fellowship in 1986.
