Prince Dan Agbese, co-founder of the influential Newswatch magazine, is dead. He was aged 81.
The Agbese family from Ado Local Government Area, Benue State, confirmed his death on Monday, November 17, 2025.
In a family statement, they honored him as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and mentor, referring to him as the Awan’Otun of Agila.
“We hereby announce the passing away of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and mentor: Chief Dan Agbese, the Awan’Otun of Agila,” the statement read.
“Chief Agbese transited to eternal glory this morning, 17 Monday November, 2025. He was aged 81.
“Burial arrangements would be announced by the family in due course.”
Born on May 12, 1944, in Agila, Agbese was a respected journalist and author, celebrated for his sharp satirical columns.
He held key roles including editor of the Nigeria Standard and New Nigerian newspapers, and General Manager of Radio Benue, Makurdi.
As a founding force behind Newswatch magazine, he steered the publication as Editor-in-Chief until April 2010.
Up to his final days, he authored numerous books, contributed weekly columns to major papers like Daily Trust and The Guardian, and managed a media consultancy with colleagues Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Muhammed, and Soji Akinrinade.
He is survived by his wife Rose, six children, and seven grandchildren. Burial details will be announced by the family.
