A fierce showdown erupted on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat, highlighting the deepening rift within the party’s leadership.
Rival factions led by Taminu Turaki’s National Working Committee (NWC) and Abdulrahman Mohammed, who claims to be acting national chairman with backing from Minister Nyesom Wike, clashed in a tense standoff.
The conflict escalated when Bauchi State Governor and PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman, Bala Mohammed, arrived around 10:45 a.m. alongside Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, only to find the main gates locked.
Forced to bypass their motorcades, the governors entered through an alternative route.
Minister Wike arrived about 30 minutes later, but faced blocked access as the governors’ convoy occupied the entrance.
Security forces resorted to teargas to disperse the crowd, including supporters, journalists, and political agitators, clearing a path for Wike.
FCT Police Deputy Commissioner Ishiaku Sharu intervened, ordering Bala Mohammed’s group to leave. Mohammed refused, demanding that Wike and others exit first.
Eventually, Bala Mohammed withdrew to the NWC meeting inside the hall, while Wike stayed put inside his vehicle at the gate, refusing to emerge.
The deadlock persists hours after the tense confrontation. This spat follows a recent announcement by Bala Mohammed’s faction in Ibadan expelling Wike and several others from the party. The two rival group had scheduled meetings at the party secretariat to with each referring to the other as illegal
