Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former two-term Governor of Anambra State, visited Dr. Chris Ngige, his predecessor and recent Minister of Labour and Productivity, to offer support following last Wednesday’s violent attack on Ngige’s convoy.
The convoy was ambushed by hoodlums along the Nkpor-Nnobi road. While Ngige was not present during the incident, a passerby tragically lost their life, and one of Ngige’s police security details was shot, with the assailants stealing his firearm and uniform.
The security detail is said to have undergone surgery and is currently recovering steadily.
Fred Chukwuelobe, a former media aide to Ngige in a statement, disclosed that upon reading the news, Obi typical of him, drove to Alor, Idemili Local Government Area home of Ngige to pay a solidarity visit to his once political foe.
The two went into a closed door session where Ngige shared moments that led to the incident and prayed for the repose of the dead victim, while wishing the wounded, which included his police orderly and a store owner, quick recovery, the statement explains further.
Addressing the press shortly after the closed door meeting, Ngige confirmed that there was a casualty in the shooting incident.
On his part, Obi said he was in Alor to express his solidarity with Ngige. “I’m happy he’s safe,” Obi said. “My own is just to thank God he’s safe and his security people are safe,” Obi added.
Obi also expressed happiness that the injured were quickly taken to the hospital and that Ngige being a physician also helped their recovery process as he directed the evacuation and treatment of the wounded from his village home as “doctors in Anambra State are on strike.”
“I’m happy he’s in good health. That’s all I came to do,” Obi concluded.
