| The late Deputy Governor Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo |
The people of Bayelsa State are grieving the sudden passing of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who died at the age of 60 following a collapse in his office on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who had served as deputy to Governor Douye Diri since 2020, was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa after collapsing during work hours. He was later pronounced dead at an undisclosed hospital.
Neither the Bayelsa State Government nor the family has released further details on the circumstances as of this report.
Born on September 5, 1965, Ewhrudjakpo was a distinguished former federal lawmaker whose career exemplified public service.
Elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform alongside Governor Diri, he became a symbol of political resolve when Diri defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ewhrudjakpo remained with the PDP, upholding his principles amid shifting allegiances.
In a formal statement, PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Emembong described the late deputy governor as “an honest and principled politician whose life was anchored on belief, integrity, and strength of character.”
The party hailed him as a “hero of political integrity,” expressing profound sorrow and extending condolences to the government, people of Bayelsa State, and his family. “May God grant his soul eternal rest,” the statement concluded.
