On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Adebayo Adedamola secured the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidacy for Osun State’s 2026 election, winning decisively in the primary election held in Osogbo, according to organizers.
Adedamola they claimed, impressively garnered 919 votes from a total of 957 cast, as announced by primary chairman Humphrey Abba.
Out of all votes, 20 were declared void. Abba revealed, “One aspirant withdrew earlier. Adebayo Adedamola, with 919 votes, is hereby declared elected and returned as the PDP candidate.”
While Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name still appeared on the ballot, his resignation from the PDP cast a shadow over the race.
Sunday Solarin, secretary of the primary committee, reminded delegates that Adeleke’s votes would be wasted since he had already quit the party, urging them to follow the voting guidelines.
The election process, which began around 11:07 a.m. after delegate accreditation, featured oversight by the Independent National Electoral Commission and a PDP committee led by Abba.
Security was tight with personnel from the Department of State Security, police, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps securing key access points.
Governor Adeleke’s resignation letter, dated November 4, 2025, had been officially submitted to PDP Ward 2 Chairman Sagba Abogunde of Ede North Local Government, preceding this dramatic turn in the party’s nominee selection.
