FIFA, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, crushed Nigeria’s lingering World Cup dreams, officially confirming DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament.
The announcement leaves the Super Eagles out in the cold after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) challenged a controversial CAF play-off loss to DR Congo in November 2025.
Nigeria alleged ineligible players in the 1-1 draw that went to penalties, which the Eagles lost, but FIFA’s accreditation notice to journalists lists the final six teams with no room for an appeal.
The notice outlines the tournament format, where Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname will battle for the last two spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup across 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
FIFA’s statement drives it home: “All six teams have now been decided.”
