Panic engulfed Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday evening, March 29, 2026, when gunmen on motorcycles unleashed a hail of bullets on unsuspecting youths, leaving several feared dead.
Eyewitnesses described the horror near Anguwan Rukuba junction: assailants sped by and fired indiscriminately, sending residents fleeing in chaos.
“They just rode past and started shooting. People scattered in all directions,” one shaken resident told Channels Television.
Fury erupted immediately, with enraged youths blocking major roads and heightening fears of escalating violence.
The Plateau State government swiftly imposed a curfew in response. As of press time, police commissioner Bassey Ewah’s command had not released an official statement.
Govt Reacts with Curfew
In response, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North LGA to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The announcement was made by Information Commissioner Joyce Lohya Ramnap, who condemned the attack as “barbaric and unprovoked.”
The curfew, which took effect from midnight Sunday, will run until April 1, 2026.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang assured residents that security forces have been deployed to restore calm, urging the public to remain vigilant and support ongoing investigations.
University of Jos Postpones Exams
The violence has disrupted academic activities at the University of Jos, with management announcing the postponement of examinations scheduled for March 30 and 31.
Deputy Registrar Emmanuel Madugu advised students and staff to avoid unnecessary movement and report suspicious activity.
Renewed Security Concerns
The latest attack underscores persistent insecurity in parts of Plateau State.
Just weeks earlier, at least 20 security personnel and vigilantes were killed in an ambush by armed bandits in Kanam LGA, highlighting the growing threat across communities in the region.
Authorities have appealed for calm as security operations intensify to track down those responsible.
