Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi has thrown his weight behind petrol subsidy removal, but with a firm caveat: the savings must directly empower everyday Nigerians.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Friday, April 17, 2026, Amaechi called for redirecting subsidy funds, long plagued by corruption, into vital sectors like education and healthcare.
“I agree with the removal of oil subsidy. What I’m saying is that the savings should be given back to Nigerians,” he said.
He slammed the mismanagement in the system, alleging theft by Nigerian Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
“Nigerian MDAs are stealing the money in the name of subsidy. So why not we get the money and hand it back to Nigerians?” he said.
Amaechi outlined practical uses for the funds: boosting primary schools, secondary schools, universities, and primary healthcare centers to make them affordable and accessible.
“You can start with primary schools, secondary schools, universities, and primary healthcare centres, let Nigerians have access to these things. It’s about affordability and accessibility,” he said.
Drawing from his gubernatorial days, he highlighted how his Rivers State administration built schools and clinics statewide, hired thousands of teachers and medical staff, and enhanced public services.
To make it work nationally, Amaechi stressed teamwork between the president and governors.
The former governor said the president needs “to engage the governors and agree on timelines. Governors are not difficult to work with if there is proper coordination.”
