The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) has demanded a thorough investigation into social media influencer Blessing Okoro, aka Blessing CEO, over claims she faked a cancer diagnosis to scam donations from Nigerians.
In a statement by National Director of Publicity Bashir Mohammed Ranccas, the NCS expressed alarm at the growing outrage, stressing the need for accountability amid fragile public trust in cancer advocacy.
The influencer reportedly begged for funds online, claiming a grave illness, and raked in significant donations from compassionate supporters.
But fresh allegations of misrepresentation have shattered the story’s credibility, raising red flags about fraud.
The NCS slammed the saga as “disturbing and unethical,” warning that exploiting cancer stories for gain could erode confidence and rob real patients of vital support.
“Cancer is not a tool for manipulation,” the statement stressed, noting that such actions, if proven, could undermine years of advocacy and discourage life-saving generosity from donors.
The NCS further announced plans to involve relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that anyone found culpable faces appropriate sanctions.
It also urged cancer patients and their families to engage only verified platforms when seeking public support, emphasising that the Society maintains structured channels to guide fundraising efforts and patient care.
While calling on donors and partners to exercise caution, the Society reaffirmed that transparency, integrity, and trust remain non-negotiable in the collective fight against cancer.
