The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the passing of Very Rev. Msgr. Gabriel Sunsay Osu, a devoted priest whose 44 years of ministry touched countless lives across the city.
Born on September 5, 1954, in Ogbego Quarters, Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, Msgr. Osu died on Friday, May 8, 2026, at age 72. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, and spiritual guidance, the statement by the Church discloses.
Ordained on December 5, 1981, as a priest of the Archdiocese of Lagos, Msgr. Osu served faithfully in key parishes and institutions, including Holy Cross Cathedral in Lagos, St. Gregory College in Ikoyi, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Oshodi, St. Paul Catholic Church in Ebute-Metta, and Our Lady Star of the Sea in Northern Foreshore, Lekki, where he resided until his death.
For many years, he also led as the Lagos Archdiocesan Director of Social Communications, bridging the Church’s message with the modern world through media and outreach.
In a heartfelt circular, Archbishop of Lagos Most Rev. Alfred Martins expressed profound sorrow tempered by “strong faith in Christ and hope in the resurrection of the body.” He urged the faithful to pray for the repose of Msgr. Osu’s soul and consolation for all who mourn.
Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
“May God grant him eternal rest and a place of happiness, light, and peace among the saints,” the statement concluded, echoing the community’s shared grief and gratitude for a shepherd who embodied Christ’s love.
