Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, has asked the United Nations and international human-rights organisations to investigate the May 15 abduction of pupils and teachers from a school in Oriire Local Government Area.
Makinde made the call during a broadcast on Monday, July 13, 2026, after receiving the rescued children and their teachers at his office in Ibadan, the state capital.
He said the “circumstances surrounding this incident are sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny,” and stressed that an external inquiry would help ensure transparency and accountability.
On May 15, gunmen attacked a school in Oriire LGA, abducting several pupils and staff and causing national alarm. Security agencies launched search-and-rescue operations involving state police and local security networks.
Tragically two of the teachers were killed, while abductees remained missing until coordinated efforts led to their recovery ahead of Monday’s reception.
The governor argues that the nature and impact of the abduction, targeting children and educators in a school setting, raises serious human-rights and child-protection concerns that go beyond routine criminal investigations.
He said an independent international review would bolster public confidence in the handling of the case and could identify gaps in prevention and response that local authorities should address.
