The African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to nominate former President Goodluck Jonathan for the role of United Nations Secretary‑General.
In a statement on Thursday, APRC convener Prof. Edward Agbai, said Jonathan’s blend of executive leadership, diplomatic experience and democratic credentials makes him a suitable candidate for the world body’s highest diplomatic office.
Agbai emphasized the need for a UN leader with a proven record in governance and the capacity to steer the organization through complex global challenges.
“The United Nations needs a leader with proven executive experience, democratic credentials, and the ability to manage complex global challenges,” Agbai said.
The consortium pointed to Jonathan’s tenure as Nigeria’s vice‑president (2007–2010) and president (2010–2015) as evidence of his capability for responsible governance. APRC also praised his concession after the 2015 election, calling it a milestone for democratic development in Africa that reinforced Nigeria’s constitutional order and national stability.
Since leaving office, the group noted, Jonathan has remained active in promoting democracy, peacebuilding and conflict resolution across the continent. He has participated in election observation and mediation under regional bodies such as the African Union, ECOWAS, COMESA, IGAD and the West African Elders Forum.
APRC said Jonathan’s approach of dialogue, consultation and consensus-building had earned him international recognition, adding that such qualities were essential for a UN Secretary-General saddled with the responsibility of mediating conflicts and promoting global cooperation.
The group further argued that Jonathan’s experience leading Nigeria’s diverse population gives him a strong understanding of global development, security and environmental challenges.
It added that the emergence of an African candidate for the position would strengthen the continent’s voice and influence in global governance.
