Nigeria has lost one of its most distinguished elder statesmen, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, whose family announced his death on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
Known widely as “Triple A,” Alhaji was a senior technocrat and career public administrator, who served in several top government positions over multiple decades.
He began his ascent through the Federal Civil Service and earned a reputation as a meticulous and effective administrator.
Alhaji’s prominent appointments included Minister of State for Budget and Planning in 1988 and Minister of Finance from 1990 to 1991 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida, where he played a central role in national economic policy at a pivotal time.
He later served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), overseeing coordination of federal cabinet operations and the administrative machinery of government.
He also represented Nigeria overseas as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
In addition to his public service, Alhaji held respected traditional titles within the Sokoto Caliphate and was a notable figure in northern Nigeria’s cultural and political circles.
The family said funeral arrangements and Islamic rites will be announced in Sokoto.
