Nigeria’s long run of World Cup appearances ended on Thursday, August 13, 2026, as the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began.
South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-1 in a decisive play-off at Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
Both sides arrived in Casablanca after missing automatic qualification at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations: Nigeria fell 1-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-finals, while South Africa were beaten 2-1 by hosts Morocco. That set up a one-off continental play-off where the winner would progress to the inter-confederation play-offs and the loser would be eliminated from World Cup contention.
South Africa struck first in the 56th minute through Thembi Kgatlana, and Refiloe Jane doubled the lead in the 77th minute.
Late drama arrived when South Africa were reduced to 10 players after a red card for a handball in the box. Christy Ucheibe converted the resulting penalty in stoppage time to make it 2-1, but Nigeria could not find a late equaliser.
The Super Falcons had earlier opportunities: Michelle Alozie curled a shot narrowly wide in the first half, Uchenna Kanu saw a header saved after the interval, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie tipped a South African chance over in the 60th minute. Despite those moments, Nigeria couldn’t overturn the deficit.
With the defeat, Nigeria’s streak of appearing at every Women’s World Cup since 1991, previously unique among African nations, comes to an end.
South Africa advances to the inter-confederation play-offs and keeps its hopes alive of reaching the 2027 tournament in Brazil.
Earlier on Thursday, Ghana claimed the other African play-off slot by beating Côte d’Ivoire 2-1; the two African winners will compete in the inter-confederation play-offs for the remaining World Cup places.
