Mr. Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has commended the alumni of the College of Immaculate Conception (CIC) for their contributions to the development of the institution, describing their efforts as a worthy example of giving back to society.

Obi made the commendation during a visit to the school, where he inspected several projects undertaken by the alumni association under the leadership of its president, Dr Valentine Ozoigbo, a Nigerian medical doctor based in the United States.

He expressed admiration for the alumni’s commitment, which has resulted in the construction of a multipurpose hall, a dormitory complex and a sports complex, as well as an ongoing five-storey staff quarters building. The association, he noted, was already planning its next project.

Obi said education remained one of the most important investments a nation could make in its future. He stressed that people who had benefited from educational institutions had a responsibility to contribute to their development and help provide better opportunities for future generations.

He urged alumni associations across Nigeria to emulate CIC’s example, noting that meaningful contributions did not depend solely on individual wealth but could be achieved through collective effort and regular contributions.

The presidential candidate also interacted with the students, encouraging them to take their studies seriously, remain disciplined and work hard. He urged them to respect their teachers, appreciate their guidance and maintain good relationships with them even after graduation.

He commended the teachers for their dedication, particularly their efforts to maintain the cleanliness of the school and the discipline evident among the students.

Earlier, the school’s principal, Rev. Fr. Oliver Ngwu, thanked Obi for his continued commitment to education, which he said he had demonstrated through both words and deeds.

The president of the alumni association, Dr Valentine Ozoigbo, who invited Obi to the school, expressed appreciation for his humility and personal interest in the institution’s development. He said he was particularly impressed that Obi followed the delegation round the various projects, taking time to inspect them firsthand.

Obi reiterated that education was fundamental to national development and that governments and citizens alike must take responsibility for improving educational institutions. He maintained that a society’s future depended significantly on how much it invested in its children and the opportunities available to them.

He stressed that education should not be viewed merely as a means of acquiring certificates, but as a process of preparing people to contribute meaningfully to society.

Obi reaffirmed that investment in education and healthcare, alongside efforts to lift people out of poverty, must remain central to Nigeria’s development priorities.
