Rivers Pipeline Blast: NNPC rushes emergency team to Eleme after explosion injures residents

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has activated emergency response measures following an explosion on a gas pipeline in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

The affected facility belongs to NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd. The company said it had isolated the damaged pipeline segment to prevent further harm while response teams assessed the impact on residents, property and the environment.

In a statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, NNPC expressed concern over reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses in the community.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses. Our thoughts are with those affected and their families. Protecting lives and preventing further harm are our immediate priorities,” Odeh said.

NNPC said NGIC is working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate the emergency response and determine the full extent of the incident.

Reports from Rivers State indicate that the explosion caused injuries and damaged buildings, vehicles and business premises in Aleto.

While the exact cause and casualty figures are still being verified, community and civil-society groups have called for a thorough investigation into the incident and an assessment of its environmental impact.

The development has also renewed concerns about the safety and maintenance of petroleum infrastructure in host communities, with residents and advocacy groups urging regulators to establish the cause of the explosion and ensure adequate support for affected residents.

The NNPC press statement nonetheless reads: “We are also engaging the host community leadership to understand immediate needs and coordinate appropriate support for those affected.

“The cause of the incident and the full extent of its impact are currently being assessed. NNPC Limited remains committed to the safe and reliable operation of its assets. Relevant operational information, including previous reports and actions taken, will be reviewed to support a clear understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities to establish the facts and determine appropriate corrective measures.

“Residents and members of the public are urged to keep clear of the affected area and follow safety instructions from emergency responders and the relevant authorities.

“NNPC Limited remains committed to the safety of its host communities, environmental protection and responsible operation of its facilities. We will provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
