Obi hails ‘fearless’ Flamingos after historic 3-1 win over Brazil, urges them to conquer Japan

Former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), Peter Obi, has warmly congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, following their historic 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

In a statement celebrating the team’s achievement, Obi praised the young players for demonstrating “exceptional talent, resilience and determination” throughout the tournament, saying their performances have made Nigeria proud on the global stage.

The Flamingos booked their place in the final for the first time in the nation’s history after defeating Brazil 3-1 in Rabat on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Queen Joseph scored once, while Awawu Bashiru netted twice as Nigeria overcame the South Americans with a fearless second-half display.

With Japan now standing between Nigeria and a first U-17 Women’s World Cup title, Obi assured the players that Nigerians at home and abroad are firmly behind them.

“As they prepare to face Japan in the final, I want to assure them that Nigerians everywhere are firmly behind them,” Obi said. “I encourage them to remain focused, confident and determined as they take this final step towards glory.”

He urged the Flamingos to approach Saturday’s final with the same courage and unity that carried them past Brazil, adding: “Once again, congratulations to the Flamingos. Keep making Nigeria proud. The sky is your limit!”

Obi described the team’s remarkable run as yet another testament to the immense potential of Nigerian youths. He argued that with the right leadership and an enabling environment, young Nigerians can continue to excel and distinguish themselves in sports and other fields.

“A New Nigeria Is Possible,” he declared, framing the Flamingos’ achievement as an inspiration for a country with abundant young talent.

Nigeria will face Japan in the final on Saturday, 7 November, in Rabat, with the chance to make further history by becoming the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
