Burkina Faso demolished Nigeria’s Flying Eagles 4-1 in the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship final in Yamoussoukro, extinguishing Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The Young Stallions dominated from the first whistle, striking three times inside the opening 15 minutes and effectively deciding the tie early. Burkina Faso added a fourth before halftime, leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb.
The Flying Eagles rallied after the break and scored a consolation, but the comeback fell short as the Young Stallions closed out a comprehensive victory.
The loss also denied Nigeria a place at the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, since the WAFU Zone B winner earned a ticket to that tournament, which serves as the qualifier for the U-20 World Cup.
This result follows Burkina Faso’s 2-0 group-stage win over Nigeria, deepening the Flying Eagles’ frustration after failing to reverse that earlier defeat.
Nigeria suffered further disappointment on the women’s side. The Super Falcons were edged 1-0 by Cameroon in a tense WAFCON quarter-final, Nyadjou’s 19th-minute strike proving decisive.
With only the four WAFCON semi-finalists securing direct qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, the loss forces the Super Falcons into Africa’s play-off route alongside the other quarter-final losers.
For the Flying Eagles, the 4-1 final defeat is a harsh end to their regional campaign; for Burkina Faso, it marks a celebrated qualification and a statement of intent on the road to next year’s continental and global youth competitions.
The Flying Eagles had reached the final after overcoming Côte d’Ivoire in a dramatic semi-final.
The match ended 2-2 after regulation time before Nigeria prevailed 4-3 on penalties to book their place in the championship decider.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, reached the final unbeaten after defeating Niger 2-0 in their semi-final.
The Young Stallions then completed an impressive campaign by defeating Nigeria 4-1 to claim the WAFU Zone B title and secure their place at the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
For Nigeria, the defeat means the seven-time U-20 AFCON champions will miss the continental tournament and the chance to qualify for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup through the competition.
